Heiemo
Heiemo steps out of her warm cabin into the breezy air. She takes in a deep breath and fills her lungs with the sea salted air. Stretching a little as she exhales, Heiemo’s eyes take in some of Norway’s beautiful countryside. For miles there is nothing but rolling green hills and vast ocean. Her small cabin sits at the bottom of a small cliff side. In the distance she hears the cool splashing of waves in it rigid face. Inspired by its grandeur Heiemo began to sing as she began her walk to the top of the cliff side. She sang a traditional folk song her mother had taught her. She span and circled on her way up feeling the bottom of her white dress flutter around her legs. Her sandy blonde hair that had been pinned up in the back was becoming increasingly messy with each spin. Heiemo finally reached the top of the hill and she continued to sing out to the sea.
Deep under the water something stirred as it caught the sound of Heiemo’s voice. Flinching for a second in the water the creature then made it way towards the mysterious noise. The creature’s body was very human in its shape but more amphibious in its design. The skin was slightly green and scaled, fingers and toes webbed, eyes completely dark, and the nose was missing but replaced with gills in the creatures sides. The creature moved at amazing speeds in the water and it had quickly made its way to the shore. The creature had found the sound very soothing and needed to find out what it was even if it meant going on land. So he stepped out onto the surface feeling the wet sand beneath his feet as he rose. With only gills to breathe the creature knew he couldn’t waste much time and ran towards the noise.
As the creature neared the top of the hill he saw Heiemo standing upon the top singing. The song was now piercing into his skull and he lost control of his body. He began to swing and sway to her voice. The creature had never moved this way but somehow it just felt right and he began to get nearer to Heiemo. When he finally reached her he decided even though he was losing oxygen he would revel just a little longer and he began to dance around her. At this point Heiemo’s eyes were closed as she sang and she never caught sight of this creature dancing around her. The creature could feel he was almost out of oxygen but he didn’t want to leave the soothing noise; so he grabbed Heiemo by the arms and was attempting to drag her back to the sea with him.
At this point Heiemo’s eyes sprang open and she began to fight back with what appeared to be some kind of water spirit. They struggled for a little while but finally Heiemo managed to free one of her arms. She reached into the back of the sash wrapped around her waist. She usually kept a dagger there to protect against wild animals in the countryside. As soon as she was able to grip it she pulled it out and plunged it deep into the water spirits chest. The water spirit let go and Heiemo stabbed him a couple more time until the water spirit staggered and fell over the cliff side. Heiemo watched him fall back into the sea and stashed her bloody dagger. She took a moment to recompose herself and then went back to singing.
